Supporting & Developing the Fort McKay First Nation Community

With over 30 years of servicing the oil sands industry, Fort McKay Group of Companies (FMGOC) has contributed to supporting and developing the Fort McKay First Nation (FMFN) community.

Quick Community Facts

  • The community of Fort McKay is located approximately 65 km north of Fort McMurray, along the banks of the Athabasca River in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo.
  • First Nation roots run deep in Fort McKay, stretching back to 1820 and coinciding with the placement of the Hudson Bay Company trading post in the area.
  • In 1912, the community was named after Dr. William Morrison MacKay – Alberta’s first resident doctor and the first President of the Northern Alberta Medical Association.
  • The Nation is managed by an elected Chief, Council and Senior Administrative body, led by the Band’s CEO.
  • To this day, community members have an unbreakable connection to the environment and continually work to protect, respect, and restore its natural beauty while attending to the economic health and growth of Fort McKay.
  • Established in 1986, the FMGOC is fully owned and operated by the Fort McKay First Nation Community, which consists of approximately 800 Dene, Cree and Metis community members.
  • The nation has always worked to ensure it has the financial independence in order to make its own decisions, as well as to provide for itself and its members.
  • FMFN and FMGOC share a common goal of building a strong and healthy community in Fort McKay. Over the years, the nation has developed many strong relationships with oil and pipeline companies.

Fort McKay First Nation Majority Owned Companies

The Nation’s business interests are conducted through a wholly owned Holding Company. The investment approach is to select industry leaders as partners and invest equally with them in the creation of a new company that we believe will be able to provide the services/products which are needed by clients. In a portfolio company, FMFN typically holds majority ownership (51%) and assigns responsibility for day-to-day operations to our skilled partner, who holds minority ownership (49%).
