Each year at Mildred Lake and Aurora North, FMGOC completes an annual soil survey program as the respective mine footprints advance. This includes collecting a detailed inventory of the pre-disturbance soil resources that are present. The process involves a quantitative inventory of reclamation cover soil (e.g. upland and surface soil, muskeg peat) and a qualitative assessment of reclamation subsoil to ensure both adequate volume and quality in the reclaimed landscape.
The soil audit is completed annually in mine areas following reclamation in accordance with the soil placement requirements outlined in Syncrude’s EPA approval. This program was designed to assist the client in ensuring appropriate operational soil handling practices were employed at the time of reclamation.
Information gathered in the soil survey is a key piece in soil salvage and placement planning.
The soil audit process ensures the development of suitable conditions to promote a wide range of sustainable end land-uses in the closure landscape
